The Impact of Social Media on the Sales of Your Speaking Business

I remember a few short years ago telling a colleague “I hate Twitter. No offense, but I don’t care where you went for lunch!” Now you hear me say, “I love Twitter!” Why? Because I’ve gotten business directly from Twitter and you can too!

I’m not here to say that Twitter is the most important platform for speakers. I’m saying that Twitter has brought me more leads that have turned into business than anything else. Further, I have learned more about social media from Twitter than anywhere else.

A few thoughts on Twitter. Remember, its social media. Don’t use TruTwit validation service. It’s not social! Don’t send automatic messages to people. It’s not social. I’m amazed by the number of people that practice unsocial behavior on social media!

When I get a new follower I check out their profile and decide if I wish to follow back. If I do, typically I will send a direct tweet thanking them for following me and if in the speaking business, inviting them to let me know if I can ever be of service. If I get a follower and don’t want to follow back I don’t message.

My direct tweet inviting a call has turned out to be gold! Who knew a simple invitation to call would yield business! I sure didn’t in the beginning, but I’m a believer now! Who knew … ask for the business!

I also have to mention a terrific Tweetchat available to NSA members every Tuesday at noon central standard time. #NSACHAT with yours truly, Eliz Greene, Phil Gerbyshak and Gina Carr. We hope you’ll join us!

On LinkedIn I decided to upgrade to the business level. It allows me to see who has recently visited my site and allows me to send direct email to other LinkedIn members. I think this is a huge advantage! Regular email may go to a spam folder, in LinkedIn it doesn’t. I decided to start my own “Book More Business” group and invite you to participate!

I don’t claim to be an expert in social media. I do know what has worked well for me. My two most important platforms are Twitter and LinkedIn. Google plus is up and coming, but not there yet. I like Facebook but have not found it to be as effective as Twitter and LinkedIn.

Remember, social media is where you show off your intellectual property! How social are you?
